Mart Laanemäe was born in 1959 in Vancouver, Canada. After studies in Vancouver and Toronto Laanemäe was awarded Dr.rer.nat. in Chemistry by Stuttgart University. He worked as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart and as an engineer at a company producing aircraft engines in Munich. From 1991-1995 Laanemäe worked at the Estonian Language Service of Radio Free Europe until he became the Commercial Director for RAS Silmet.

Mart Laanemäe joined the diplomatic service in 1996 as the Undersecretary for Policy issues. From 1999-2003 Laanemäe was Estonia’s Ambassador to Austria, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic and Switzerland and he was the Permanent Representative to international organisations in Vienna. After that Laanemäe worked as the Director-General of the Minister’s Office and from 2004-2008 he was the Undersecretary for external economic issues and development cooperation. From 2004-2008 he was the non-resident ambassador to Serbia. From 2008-2012 he was Estonia’s Ambassador to Germany for the first time and after that the Undersecretary for Europe and Transatlantic Relations.

Ambassador Mart Laanemäe is married and has one child.
